Conservatory Roofs in Bristol

Plenty of Bristol conservatories end up as the room nobody uses, too hot to sit in come July, too cold by October, and loud as a drum when the rain comes down. If that sounds like yours, the roof is almost always the reason, and the good news is that it is very fixable.

We are JD Home Improvements, a family run roofing team in Shirehampton, and we repair and replace conservatory roofs across Bristol and the towns nearby. Below we run through why these roofs cause trouble and how to turn a wasted space back into a room you actually want to be in.

Why conservatory roofs cause so much trouble

Most of the problem comes down to the original roof. Older conservatories were topped with polycarbonate or thin glass, materials that do almost nothing to hold heat in or keep it out. In summer the sun turns the room into a greenhouse, in winter the warmth escapes straight through the roof, and in heavy rain the panels rattle and drum so loudly you can barely hear the television.

On top of that, these roofs age badly. Polycarbonate discolours and grows algae in its channels, and the join where the conservatory meets the house is a classic spot for leaks. The result is a room that cost good money to build and now sits empty half the year. Sorting the roof is what brings it back to life.

Your options for a conservatory roof

There is no single right answer, only the one that suits how you want to use the room and what you want to spend. Here are the four routes we take.

Tiled warm roof conversion

This is the most popular upgrade by far. A lightweight insulated roof is built over the existing frame and finished with tiles that match your house, turning the conservatory into a proper, year-round room that stays warm in winter and cool in summer. Because it closes off the roof, we usually add roof windows to keep the light, which brings in our Velux and skylight work.

Glass roof replacement

Swapping tired old panels for modern solar-control, self-cleaning glass keeps the bright, open feel while cutting the summer heat and winter chill a great deal. It is a strong choice if you love the light and want to keep the conservatory feeling like a conservatory.

Polycarbonate replacement

The entry-level option is to replace old polycarbonate with new. It freshens the look and stops leaks, but it does least for comfort and has the shortest life, so we are always honest about its limits before you spend.

Repairs and leak fixes

If the roof is sound but leaking, often at the flashing or the box gutter where it meets the house, a repair is all it takes. We cover that under our roof repairs, re-sealing joints and renewing failed flashing to stop water getting in.

Here is how the three replacement options compare:

Conservatory roofs on Bristol homes

A huge number of Bristol homes gained a conservatory in the building boom of the nineties and two-thousands, and many of those roofs are now well past their best. Across the suburbs, from Bradley Stoke and Downend to Nailsea and Portishead, the same story repeats: a nice addition to the house that has become too hot in summer and too cold in winter to enjoy.

Our wet, breezy South West weather does these roofs no favours. Rain hammers the polycarbonate and damp works into perished seals. Meanwhile the exposed box gutter between house and conservatory fills with debris and overflows. The upside is that a good roof upgrade suits the local climate beautifully, giving you a room that works in a Bristol winter as well as a summer.

Will a new conservatory roof need building regulations?

This is where honest advice matters, because a good installer will not gloss over it. A tiled warm roof adds real weight to a structure that was built for lightweight glazing, so it needs a proper check of the existing frame and base, and in most cases notification to building control. We assess whether your conservatory can carry a solid roof and arrange the structural and building-control side as part of the project, so the finished room is safe and signed off.

Glass and polycarbonate replacements on the existing frame are usually more straightforward. Either way, we will tell you exactly what your chosen option involves before you commit, with no surprises later.

How we replace a conservatory roof, step by step

We keep the whole thing clear and tidy:

  1. We visit and advise. We look at the frame and base, and at how you want to use the room, then talk you through the options honestly.
  2. We check it can take the roof. For a warm roof, we assess the structure and arrange any building-control requirements.
  3. We quote in writing. A clear, itemised, no-obligation price.
  4. We remove the old roof. The tired panels come off and the frame is prepared.
  5. We build the new roof. Insulated and tiled or re-glazed, to your choice, with roof windows where wanted.
  6. We seal it to the house. Fresh flashing and a sound box gutter so the join stays watertight.
  7. We finish and guarantee. A final check and our workmanship warranty, with a 15 year guarantee on qualifying work.

What affects the cost

We price every conservatory after seeing it, so be cautious of a figure given blind. The main factors are:

  • The option you choose. A tiled warm roof sits above glass, which sits above polycarbonate.
  • Size and shape. Every conservatory shape differs, from a simple lean-to to a P-shape.
  • Roof windows and extras. How much light you want back shapes the spec.
  • The structure. Whether the frame and base can carry a warm roof as they are, or need strengthening.

Our quotes are free and carry no obligation. You can request a free quote and we will come and look.

How to choose a conservatory roof installer

This is roofing work as much as glazing, so choose a roofer who understands both:

  • Proper accreditation. We are registered with the Confederation of Roofing Contractors (CORC) and our team holds CSCS cards.
  • A structural check for warm roofs. Anyone offering to drop a tiled roof on without assessing the frame is one to avoid.
  • A written quote after a visit. Never a price guessed from a photo.
  • A proper guarantee. Ours is 15 years on qualifying work.
  • Local and accountable. We work from Shirehampton, and you only pay once the job is finished to your satisfaction.

If a conservatory roof ever leaks badly in a storm, we also offer fast call-outs for sudden leaks.

Areas we cover

We repair and replace conservatory roofs across Bristol and the surrounding towns. Many of the conservatories we see were added to family homes in Bradley Stoke during the 1990s, and plenty more sit on the back of semis in Downend. If yours has become too hot in summer or too cold in winter, give us a ring.

Conservatory roof FAQs

Why is my conservatory too hot in summer and cold in winter?

Because the original polycarbonate or thin glass roof does little to hold heat in or keep it out. Upgrading to an insulated tiled roof or modern solar-control glass is what makes the room comfortable all year.

Can I put a tiled roof on my existing conservatory?

Usually yes, provided the frame and base can take the extra weight. We check that first and handle the structural and building-control side, so the finished room is safe and signed off.

Do I need building regulations for a new conservatory roof?

A tiled warm roof generally does, since it changes the structure. Glass and polycarbonate replacements on the existing frame are usually simpler. We will tell you exactly what your option needs.

Will a solid roof make the room dark?

It does not have to. We fit roof windows into warm roofs to keep plenty of natural light while gaining the comfort and quiet of a solid roof.

My conservatory roof leaks where it joins the house, why?

Nearly always failed flashing or a blocked box gutter at that join. It is a common fault and a straightforward fix once we get to it.

Is a warm roof better than glass?

It depends on how you use the room. A warm roof gives the best year-round comfort and quiet, while glass keeps the bright, airy feel. We will help you weigh it up.

How long does a conservatory roof replacement take?

Many are done within a few days, depending on size and the option chosen. We give you a timescale in your quote.

Can I add roof windows to a tiled conservatory roof?

Yes. A tiled roof can include roof windows to bring daylight back into the room, which many people choose so the space still feels bright. We will suggest the best size and position when we quote.

Let us bring your conservatory back to life

A conservatory should be one of the nicest rooms in the house, not the one you avoid half the year. Whether you want a warm tiled roof or simply a leak sorted, we will give you honest advice and a fair, free quote. Have a look at our other roofing services, or get in touch and we will come and see what yours needs.
