We are JD Home Improvements, a family run roofing company on West Town Road in Shirehampton. Joe, our director, has more than 20 years of roofing experience, and he leads a team of over a dozen roofers alongside his son Tommy. This page sets out what we see on Henleaze roofs and how we can help keep yours in good order.
Inter-war homes with plenty of character
Henleaze grew quickly in the 1920s and 1930s, when builders laid out long roads of semi-detached houses between Westbury Park and Golden Hill. Many have hipped roofs in red clay or concrete tiles, with two-storey bay windows at the front. A good number also have tile-hung gables or decorative timber details that give each road its own look.

Older Edwardian houses sit closer to the Downs and around Henleaze Park, often with slate roofs and larger chimney stacks. Across both groups, most homes have gained something over the years, whether a loft conversion with roof windows or a rear kitchen extension with a flat roof.
How inter-war roofs age
A roof from the 1930s may still have its original tiles and the nails that hold them. Clay tiles can last a very long time, yet the fixings holding them in place rarely match that lifespan. As nails corrode, tiles start to slip, and you may notice a gap in an otherwise even row or a broken tile on the path.
Ridge and hip tiles on these roofs were bedded in sand and cement. That mortar dries out and cracks over the decades, until wind can lift the tiles or rain can seep under them. Bay window roofs bring their own risks, because their small lead or felt coverings sit right under the main gutter and take a lot of runoff.
Common roof problems in Henleaze
- Slipped clay tiles where the original nails have rusted away.
- Loose ridge and hip tiles sitting on crumbling mortar.
- Leaking bay roofs where lead has split or felt has worn through.
- Damp chimney breasts caused by failing flashing on shared stacks.
Slipped tiles and loose hips are routine roof repairs for our team. Lofts in Henleaze convert well, and our Velux and roof window service brings daylight into those rooms without changing the look from the road. Tired timber fascias and leaking gutters are best replaced with uPVC fascias and guttering that will not need painting again.
Loft conversions and roof windows
Hipped roofs on Henleaze semis have a generous space inside, and many families have turned that space into an extra bedroom or a home office. Roof windows are the simplest way to light those rooms. Fitted on the rear slope, they keep the street view unchanged while letting in far more light than a small dormer.
Fitting a Velux window properly means fixing the frame firmly to the rafters, then dressing the flashing kit into the tiles so water runs past it. Done well, the window blends into the roof and stays watertight for years. We also replace older roof windows whose seals have failed or whose frames have started to rot.
Extensions and flat roofs
Rear kitchen extensions are common on Henleaze roads, and many were finished with felt flat roofs in the 1980s and 1990s. Felt of that age is near the end of its life. Watch for cracks in the surface and puddles that linger after rain. When those appear, a leak is not far behind. We strip the old felt off and repair the deck where needed, then lay a new covering suited to the space.

Weather by the Downs
Henleaze is sheltered compared with the riverside parts of Bristol, yet it still catches westerly wind across the open Downs. Roofs on the higher roads near Golden Hill and the Downs edge feel that most, and their ridges and verges need to be firmly fixed. Streets closer to Henleaze Lake and the old quarry are more sheltered but shadier, so moss and algae build up faster.
Mature street trees are part of the appeal of the area. They also shed leaves into gutters and valleys every autumn. A blocked gutter sends water down the brickwork or back under the bottom row of tiles, which can rot the fascia board behind it. Clearing gutters each year and checking that downpipes run freely is one of the simplest ways to protect a Henleaze roof.

Getting to Henleaze from Shirehampton
We usually take Shirehampton Road through Stoke Bishop, then cut through Westbury Park to Henleaze Road. The shops on the main parade make a handy landmark, and most streets in Henleaze are only a minute or two either side of it.

Neighbouring Westbury-on-Trym and the Victorian terraces of Bishopston are also regular areas for our team.
Henleaze roofing FAQs
Can you match the red clay tiles on my 1930s semi?
In most cases, yes. We reuse sound tiles where possible and source new or reclaimed tiles to match colour and profile.
Why do my clay tiles keep slipping?
Usually because the original nails have rusted. We can refix individual tiles, but if it is happening across a whole slope, relaying it with new fixings may be the better option.
My bay window roof is leaking. Can you repair it?
Yes. We repair or replace the lead or felt covering on bay roofs, along with the flashing where they meet the wall.
Can you fit roof windows for my loft conversion?
We can. We fit Velux windows into tiled and slate roofs, with flashing kits that keep the join watertight.
Our chimney is shared with next door. Can you still repair it?
Yes. We can quote for the whole stack and explain the work to both households so everyone knows what is involved.
How long does a flat roof replacement take?
A typical kitchen extension roof takes a day or two, depending on its size and the condition of the deck underneath.
When do I pay?
Only once the work is finished and you are completely satisfied with it.
Are your quotes free?
Yes. Every quote in Henleaze is free and carries no obligation.
