Roofers in Sea Mills

Sea Mills was one of Bristol's first garden suburbs, laid out after the First World War with cottage-style homes set among wide verges and generous gardens. Those houses are now a century old, and their roofs need a roofer who understands how they were built.

We are JD Home Improvements, a family run roofing company based on West Town Road in Shirehampton, just along the Portway from Sea Mills. Joe, our director, has more than 20 years on the tools, and our team of over a dozen roofers works on homes across this part of Bristol every week. This page covers the roofs we see in Sea Mills and what we can do for yours.

Roofs in a century-old garden suburb

Most homes in Sea Mills date from the 1920s and early 1930s, when the council built the estate on the slopes above the River Trym. Many are rendered semis and short terraces with steep hipped roofs, finished with deep eaves and tall chimney stacks. Clay tiles were common originally, though a large number have since been re-covered in concrete tiles.

Those hipped roofs look simple from the street, yet they have more ridges and hips than a plain gable roof, and every one of those joints relies on mortar or a fixing to stay watertight. After a hundred years of weather, plenty of that original work is ready for attention. Chimney stacks shared between pairs of houses can also be a source of leaks when the flashing gives way.

What goes wrong on Sea Mills roofs

Most of the calls we get from Sea Mills fall into a handful of groups:

  • Hip and ridge tiles working loose as the old mortar crumbles, often noticed when a piece lands in the garden.
  • Moss and lichen thickening on slopes shaded by mature trees along the Trym valley.
  • Leaking chimney flashing on the shared stacks, showing up as damp patches on chimney breasts upstairs.
  • Tired concrete tiles from earlier re-roofs that have become porous and brittle.

Loose hips and slipped tiles are everyday roof repairs for us. When a whole roof is wearing out, a new roof with fresh battens and a breathable membrane under the tiles will see the house through its next few decades. Shared stacks with failing lead are a job for our chimney repairs service, and we can talk to your neighbour too if the work affects both homes.

Keeping the character of the estate

Sea Mills has a distinctive look, and many residents care about keeping it. When we re-roof or repair, we aim to match tile colour and profile as closely as we can, so a repaired slope does not stand out from the rest of the street. If the original clay tiles are still sound, we would always rather reuse them than throw them away.

Loft conversions are popular here too, and roof windows can bring a lot of light into those steep hipped roof spaces. We fit Velux windows into existing tiled roofs and finish the flashing so the tiles sit neatly around them.

Flat roofs and extensions

Over the decades many Sea Mills homes have gained a rear kitchen extension or a porch. Most of those were finished with felt flat roofs, and felt has a limited life. Once it starts to crack or hold puddles after rain, leaks follow, often into a kitchen ceiling.

When a flat roof reaches that stage, we strip it back to the deck and replace any rotten boards before laying a modern covering. On small porch roofs, a neat lead or tiled finish can suit the cottage style of the estate better than felt, and we will talk you through what fits your house.

Gutters deserve a mention too. Deep eaves on the hipped roofs carry long gutter runs, and leaves from the trees along the Trym clog them every autumn. Sagging or leaking gutters send water onto the render, which then stains and cracks. Clearing and realigning them, or replacing tired sections, protects the walls as well as the roof.

How we work

Give us a call and describe the problem. We will book a visit and look at the roof properly, then explain what we find without jargon. A free written quote follows, setting out exactly what we propose and what it costs.

If you decide to go ahead, we agree a start date with you and keep you updated as the job progresses. Payment only comes at the end, once you have seen the finished roof and are completely happy with it.

Most jobs in Sea Mills take a day or two for repairs and longer for a full re-roof. We will give you a realistic timescale with the quote so you can plan around it.

From Shirehampton to Sea Mills

We head east along the Portway from Shirehampton, past the Sea Mills station on the Severn Beach line, and turn up into the estate by the river. Sea Mills Square, with its shops, sits at the heart of the area, and most streets are only a minute or two from there.

We also work across the neighbouring areas. In Stoke Bishop the houses are larger and older, while up the Trym valley in Westbury-on-Trym the roofs are a mix of period villas and inter-war semis.

Sea Mills roofing FAQs

Can you match the tiles on my Sea Mills house?

In most cases, yes. We source tiles to match the colour and profile of your existing roof, and we reuse sound originals wherever possible.

Pieces of mortar keep falling from my roof. What does that mean?

It usually means the bedding under your ridge or hip tiles is breaking down. Those tiles can then lift in strong wind, so it is worth having them rebedded or mechanically fixed before they come off.

My chimney is shared with next door. Who pays for repairs?

That depends on your arrangement with your neighbour, but we are happy to quote for the whole stack and explain the work to both households.

Can you clear moss without damaging the tiles?

Yes. We remove moss by hand rather than blasting it off with a pressure washer, then treat the roof to slow regrowth.

When do I have to pay?

Only once the work is finished and you are completely satisfied with it.

Do you charge for quotes in Sea Mills?

No. Every quote is free and there is no obligation to go ahead.

Should I re-roof with clay or concrete tiles?

Both work well. Clay tiles are closer to what many Sea Mills homes had originally and they age gracefully, while concrete tiles cost less. We will show you samples and explain how each would look on your house.
