Roofers in Shirehampton

Shirehampton is home for us. Our yard sits on West Town Road, so when a roof in the village needs attention we are already round the corner, and we know how the wind off the estuary treats every street from Penpole Point down to the Lamplighters.

We are JD Home Improvements, a family run roofing company at 28 West Town Rd, Shirehampton, BS11 9NQ. Joe, our director, has spent over 20 years on roofs, and he runs a team of more than a dozen roofers with his son Tommy. This page explains what we see on Shirehampton roofs and how we can help with yours.

Your roofer, based in the village

Plenty of companies say they are local. We genuinely are. Our vans head out from West Town Road, so when you ring about a slipped tile on Station Road or a leak above a bay window on Pembroke Road, you are talking to people who know those streets well.

Being this close matters on a roof. Small faults get caught before they turn into ceiling stains, and if anything ever needs a second look after we finish, we are only minutes away. You also get a roofer whose reputation lives in the same village as you, which keeps everyone honest.

Shirehampton roofs and the weather they face

Housing here falls into a few clear groups. Around the High Street and up Station Road you find Victorian and Edwardian terraces with slate or clay tiles, many of them topped by tall brick chimney stacks. Further out, towards Penpole and the streets near the park, sit inter-war semis and later council-built homes, mostly finished in concrete tiles that grow porous and mossy with age.

Every one of those roofs shares the same weather. Shirehampton faces the mouth of the Avon where it meets the Severn Estuary, and the prevailing wind carries rain straight in off the water. That driving rain finds its way under loose ridge tiles and through tired mortar long before it would on a sheltered inland street, so local roofs need their edges kept tight.

Problems we fix around BS11

A few faults come up again and again in Shirehampton, and most of them trace back to the wind:

  • Slipped or cracked tiles after a stormy night, especially on exposed slopes facing the river.
  • Loose ridge and hip tiles where the old mortar bedding has dried out and crumbled.
  • Failing chimney flashing on the older terraces, letting water track down inside the stack.
  • Blocked or sagging gutters full of moss washed off the tiles above.

Most of these are straightforward roof repairs if they are caught early. When a slope has reached the end of its life, with tiles flaking and battens rotten beneath, we will talk you through a new roof instead. Older stacks on the High Street terraces often need our chimney repair team to repoint them and renew the lead.

Roofing work we carry out in Shirehampton

Day to day, our Shirehampton jobs cover everything from a single tile to a complete strip and re-roof. We replace flat roofs on rear extensions and garages, and we fit uPVC fascias and guttering where old timber boards have rotted. Shaded north-facing slopes often need their moss cleared and treated too. Loft conversions keep us busy too, with Velux windows fitted into existing tiled roofs.

Whatever the job, you get a free quote first. One of us will come round, get up on the roof where it is safe to do so, and explain what we found in plain English. Nothing starts until you are happy with the plan.

What happens when you call us

Ring the office and tell us what you have noticed, whether that is a damp patch on a bedroom ceiling or a tile lying on the path. We will arrange a time to come round, usually with a ladder on the van so we can get a proper look rather than guessing from the pavement.

After the visit you get a written quote that sets out the work and the price. If a small repair will do the job, we say so. Should the roof need more, we explain why and show you what we saw. Once you are happy, we book a start date and keep you posted until the job is done.

Payment only comes at the very end. We walk round the finished work with you and only ask to be paid when you are satisfied with every part of it.

Finding us on West Town Road

Our base is at 28 West Town Rd, a short walk from Shirehampton station and the shops on the High Street. If you are coming off the Portway, turn up into the village and West Town Road runs off towards the park. Most homes in BS11 are a couple of minutes from us by van.

If you would like to talk a job through before anyone visits, ring us and describe what you are seeing. You will deal with the same team from the first call to the final walk round.

We also work across the neighbouring estates and villages. Next door in Avonmouth the estuary wind is even stronger, while along the river in Sea Mills the garden suburb houses have their own set of roofing quirks.

Shirehampton roofing FAQs

Are you really based in Shirehampton?

Yes. Our address is 28 West Town Rd, Shirehampton, Bristol, BS11 9NQ, and a large share of our work is in and around the village.

Do you work on the older terraces around the High Street?

Regularly. Slate and clay roofs with tall chimney stacks are everyday work for us, and we match materials so a repair blends in with the rest of the roof.

My roof takes a battering from the estuary wind. What can you do?

We start with the ridge and verges, because that is where wind does most of its damage. Anything loose gets rebedded or mechanically fixed, and slipped or cracked tiles are swapped for matching ones so the slope sheds water properly again.

Can you replace the flat roof on my rear extension?

Yes. We strip old felt roofs back to the deck and replace them with a modern covering suited to the space, and we will explain the options when we quote.

When do I pay?

Only once the work is finished and you are completely happy with it. We will walk round the job with you first.

Do you give free quotes in Shirehampton?

Always. Every quote is free and carries no obligation, and being in the village we can usually arrange a visit easily.
