We are JD Home Improvements, a family run roofing company on West Town Road in Shirehampton, just over the Avonmouth Bridge from Portishead. Joe, our director, has over 20 years of roofing experience, and he runs a team of more than a dozen roofers with his son Tommy. This page explains what we see on Portishead roofs and how we can help.
A coastal town of many ages
Portishead has grown in stages. The older town around the High Street and up the hill towards Nore Road has Victorian and Edwardian villas and terraces, many with slate roofs and tall chimneys. Through the twentieth century, estates of semis and bungalows spread across the slopes. More recently, the Port Marine and Quays developments have added hundreds of modern homes around the marina.

That mix gives Portishead every kind of roof, from century-old slate to modern concrete tiles laid only a few years ago. What they all share is exposure to the weather coming in off the Severn.
Living with estuary weather
Wind off the Severn is strong and frequent, and it drives rain sideways into any gap it can find. Ridge tiles and verges suffer first, especially on roofs facing the water. Salt in the air speeds up corrosion of metal fixings, and older lead can fatigue faster than it would inland.
Homes up on the hill enjoy wonderful views across the channel, but they also catch more wind than those tucked into the valley. We take that exposure into account on every job, using clips and mechanical fixings so tiles stay put in future storms.
Common roof problems in Portishead
- Wind-lifted tiles on slopes facing the estuary.
- Loose ridges and verges where mortar has failed.
- Corroded fixings and tired lead on older roofs.
- Leaking flat roofs on extensions and garages.
Lifted tiles and loose ridges are quick roof repairs in most cases. Flat roofs over extensions and garages are a job for our flat roofing team, who strip the old covering and lay a modern one built to cope with coastal weather. On older slate roofs where nail sickness has set in, our pitched roofing service can strip and relay the slate with new stainless fixings.
Victorian homes on the hill
Portishead's older villas often have steep slate roofs beneath large chimney stacks. Their slates may still be sound, though the original nails rust through over time, letting slates slip. Chimney stacks exposed to the weather lose their pointing until the lead flashing around them finally gives up.
We repair these roofs in keeping with their character, reusing sound slates and matching any replacements. Stacks are repointed and given fresh lead where needed.
Newer homes at the Quays
Homes at Port Marine and the Quays are modern and may still be covered by a builder's warranty for some faults. If something goes wrong, check your warranty first. For anything it does not cover, such as storm damage to a few tiles or a blocked gutter, we are happy to help.
Apartments at the marina usually have shared roofs managed by a management company, so roof repairs there are normally arranged through them.
Rooflines in salt air
Salt air is hard on rooflines. Older cast iron gutters rust quickly near the coast, and timber fascias weather faster than they would inland. Replacing them with uPVC fascias and guttering removes the need for painting and stands up well to coastal conditions.

Bungalows and mid-century homes
Portishead has plenty of bungalows and mid-century semis on its slopes, many with concrete tiled roofs now fifty or sixty years old. Their tiles have weathered and their mortar ridges have cracked. Wind off the water then finds those weak spots quickly.
Many of these roofs can be made far more storm-proof without a full replacement. Dry ridge and dry verge systems fix tiles mechanically, and replacing perished felt at the eaves stops water running behind the gutter. Where the tiles themselves are failing, we will explain the case for a new roof and price it clearly.

Portishead roofing FAQs
Wind keeps lifting tiles on my roof. Can you stop it?
We replace the slipped tiles and fit clips and mechanical fixings where wind gets in. A dry ridge or dry verge can also help on exposed roofs.
Do you use stainless fixings near the coast?
Yes. On coastal roofs we use corrosion-resistant fixings so slates and tiles stay secure for longer.
My new build at the Quays has a roof problem. Can you help?
Check your builder's warranty first. If the fault is not covered, we are happy to look at it.
Can you replace rusted cast iron gutters?
We can. We replace them with uPVC guttering, which stands up well to salt air.
Do you repair Victorian slate roofs?
Yes. We refix slipped slates, or strip and relay a slope with new fixings if nail sickness has spread.
Can you replace the flat roof on my extension?
Yes. We strip the old covering and check the deck before laying a new flat roof suited to coastal weather.
When do I pay?
Only once the job is finished and you are fully satisfied with it.
Is the quote free?
Yes. Every quote in Portishead is free and carries no obligation.
