We are JD Home Improvements, a family run roofing company on West Town Road in Shirehampton, a couple of minutes up the road from Avonmouth. Joe, our director, has over 20 years in the trade, and our team of more than a dozen roofers looks after homes right across BS11. Here is what we know about Avonmouth roofs and how we can help with yours.
Roofing next door to the docks
Avonmouth grew up around its docks, and much of the housing still reflects that. Rows of Victorian and Edwardian terraces were built for dock workers close to Avonmouth Road and Gloucester Road, while inter-war council homes spread out towards the station and the playing fields. Newer estates and a scattering of bungalows fill the gaps.

Those older terraces usually carry slate or clay tiles with brick chimney stacks shared between neighbours. On the inter-war and later homes you will mostly find concrete interlocking tiles, and many have a flat-roofed extension at the back. Each type ages in its own way, and we have worked on plenty of both.
Estuary weather and what it does to a roof
Few places in Bristol are as exposed. Wind comes straight off the estuary with nothing to slow it down, and it carries rain sideways into every gap it can find. Ridge tiles bedded in old mortar work loose first, followed by tiles on the most exposed slopes. Verges at the gable ends take a hammering too.
Salt in the air adds another layer of wear. Metal fixings corrode faster here than further inland, and older cast iron gutters rust through far sooner than you might expect. Moss tends to be less of a problem than in shaded suburbs, but lichen still builds up on north-facing slopes and holds damp against the tiles.
Common Avonmouth roof problems
- Slipped and missing tiles after a stormy night, usually on the slope facing the water.
- Loose ridge tiles where the mortar has cracked away, letting rain into the roof space.
- Leaking felt flat roofs on rear extensions and garages, where old felt has blistered or split.
- Rusted or overflowing gutters that send water down the brickwork instead of into the drains.
Most of these are quick roof repairs when they are spotted early. A blistered garage or extension roof is usually better replaced outright, and our flat roofing team will strip it back to the deck and lay a modern covering that copes with the wind. Where gutters have rusted or boards have rotted, we fit new uPVC fascias and guttering so there is nothing left to paint.
Homes beside the port
Avonmouth is unusual because family homes sit within sight of warehouses and port buildings. Our work here is domestic roofing, whether that means a terraced house or one of the flats above the shops on Gloucester Road. If you own a flat, check with your freeholder or managing agent before booking any roof work, since the roof is often shared and their consent may be needed.

Older terraces near the docks often have rear outriggers with their own small slate or tiled roofs. Those low roofs meet the main wall at a lead or mortar flashing, and that joint is a common source of damp in back bedrooms and kitchens. We check it as a matter of course whenever we are on a terrace roof.
Scaffolding on narrow streets needs a little planning. Where a pavement licence or a neighbour's permission is needed, we explain what is involved before the job starts so nothing comes as a surprise on the day.
How a job works with us
Call us and describe what you have seen. We will arrange a visit and take a proper look from a ladder or the roof itself where that is safe, then talk you through what we find. You then receive a free written quote with the work and the price spelled out.
We are straight with people. If a handful of tiles and some fresh mortar will sort the problem, that is what we quote for. When a roof is beyond patching, we explain why and show you what we saw so you can make the decision with the facts in front of you.
Nothing is paid until the job is complete. We walk round the finished roof with you, and only when you are completely satisfied do we ask for payment.

Avonmouth roofing FAQs
How far are you from Avonmouth?
Very close. Our base at 28 West Town Rd, Shirehampton, is a short drive along the Portway from Avonmouth.
Wind keeps lifting tiles on my roof. Can you stop it happening again?
We can replace the slipped tiles and check the ridge and verges where wind gets in. Where the old mortar has failed, we rebed or mechanically fix those tiles so they hold much better in future storms.
My garage roof leaks every winter. Is it worth repairing?
Sometimes a patch will do, but an old felt roof that leaks every year is usually at the end of its life. We will tell you honestly which makes more sense once we have looked at it.
Do you replace old cast iron gutters?
Yes. We can swap rusted cast iron or tired plastic for new uPVC guttering, usually alongside fresh fascia boards if the timber behind has rotted.
When do I pay for the work?
Only once the job is finished and you are completely happy with it.
Are your quotes free?
Yes. Every quote in Avonmouth is free and comes with no obligation to go ahead.
Do you check the flashing on rear outriggers?
Yes. On Avonmouth terraces the joint where a back extension roof meets the main wall is a common leak point, so we look at it whenever we are up on the roof and renew the lead or mortar if it has failed.
Can you work on my roof if the street is narrow?
Usually, yes. We plan scaffold or access towers around the street, and if a licence or a neighbour's permission is needed we explain that before the job is booked.
